WHAF Strategy 2016 -30

What we do and why we do it

The 21st century is a period of enormous social change. Our world is being reshaped by globalization, rapidly developing technology, climate change, polarizing wealth and a growing population exploiting limited resources.

These changes are having a profound impact on where and how people live. They bring threats of social division and conflict. All too often the worst effects are felt by the most vulnerable people and those on the lowest incomes.

But change also brings opportunities. The early twenty first century is proving a period of abundance for creative new ideas, for realizing innovative thinking and for advancing the way homes are provided and the way in which people live.

At WHAF we want to make the most of these opportunities and help spread the beneficial effects to those most in need.

Aims:

  1. To promote social and environmentally sustainable human settlements, development, urbanizations and achievements of shelter for all.
  2. To promote environmental sanitation, personal hygiene and healthy living.
  3. To promote World Habitat Day and Shelter for all through such programs as summits, workshops and conferences.
  4. To promote education in rural areas especially on adequate proper shelter developmental areas.
  5. To encourage human capacity building through schemes and job creation, using small and medium scale enterprises.
  6. To promote culture, cultural pride, intercultural communication and religion tolerance.
  7. To partner with like-minded organizations towards achieving the above-mentioned aims.

Our Organization

WHAF is a registered NGO whose objectives are to carry out research into all aspects of residential housing and publish the results of that research. As a non-profit making organization limited by guarantee, it has no shareholders and all its funds are used to deliver its charitable objectives.

WHAF is governed by a board of directors, who are also the trustees of the Foundation. WHAF has a small, dedicated team of staff and works in collaboration with a range of organizations throughout the world.

WHAF is financially dependent, deriving its income from donor agencies, individuals, companies and parastatals. We have a liaison office located in the F.C.T, Abuja in Nigeria with representatives in the United States of America and Canada.

Through our work we have developed a global network of innovative organizations who share our goal of better, safety, healthy housing. International links have been established both within Africa and beyond.

At WHAF we sought to encourage self-help and self-reliance, encouraging people to recognise and use their own skills and abilities. Within our local area, WHAF is constantly supporting and helping in promoting the core values of selfless services and pioneering new ways of helping the downtrodden; i.e orphans, older and disabled people to live independently in their own homes.

We will never shy away from tackling the most difficult issues – always seeking to identify solutions to the most challenging problems and actively bringing people together to solve them. For example, with the increasing dramatically number of displaced persons in Nigeria, devastating effects on millions of children, women and men, WHAF led the way in bringing together people to help bring succor to the IDP’s and find workable solutions.
